Skin cancer is the out-of-control growth of abnormal cells in the outermost layer of your skin, the epidermis. It is caused by DNA damage that triggers mutations. These mutations lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.
The damage is caused by harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun or UV tanning beds. If it is caught early, skin cancer can be successfully treated. It is advised to look out for spots, freckles or moles that stand out as being different to your surrounding skin, as they may be skin cancer.
Skin cancer mostly appears as a new and unusual looking spot. It may also appear as an existing spot that has changed in colour, size or shape. If you notice any of these changes, you should get it checked by your doctor or dermatologist immediately.
